I watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame yesterday and realized several things about this movie, things you don’t realize when you’re 6 (well i was six when it was released)
1. this was not a movie meant for me at that time. it’s a movie you shouldn’t have seen as a child because it will scare the fuck out of you. but now that i am less of a kid, and have a grasp of the things that are going on in this movie, i really find it nice.
it’s a fantastically dark film, and it really could have gotten darker, but you have to keep it Disney. it’s simplified plot makes it easy for kids to digest, but this is more about as adult as Disney goes, and it’s good.
2. The song Hellfire, as pictured above, is the most intense song i’ve ever seen used in a movie. Its scary. It brought chills to me when i saw it for the first time in a long time. The thing is there is a sequence that runs for five minutes beginning with Quasimodo singing about Esmerelda, him ringing the bells for a mass, the priests of Notre Dame chanting, then Frollo going into his song, Hellfire. There’s some serious juxtaposition here, and there is so much that goes on here that it sets up a truly epic ending to a great movie.
3. The hero doesn’t get the girl. That’s the reason they made a sequel to this movie THAT WAS DIRECT TO HOME VIDEO. They destroyed what was a great ending, a fairly conclusive ending at that, by creating some convoluted shit of a movie that looked like it was animated by a 6 year old. I thought they sent a clear message at the end of the original movie that life will give you good things, not everything, but you will get your day in the sun…at some point. It was nice, but the bottomline is, it is a nice change to see that you don’t have to get the girl to be happy. Not very Disney at the end of it all, but very true to life.
4. Every major character has a scene in this movie that they either hallucinate or are completely and utterly stoned like it’s not even funny. Watch it again, and you really have to believe either something’s in the water or they were smokin some strong marijuana. Talking to gargoyles, imagining that an empty room is full of cloaked figures in blood red… man something’s up.
5. The Church is portrayed as too nice. Really. For a movie with the primary setting being the most famous cathedral in France, I can’t see why they didn’t show any of the religious leaders pushing their weight around like they could have to do ANYTHING AT ALL. It’s like they’re there as barely even moral consciences. Well what can you do
